PJ Hegarty as part of the ICON Consortium won the tender for the M50 (Phase 2) PPP Contract in September 2007, a major infrastructure scheme to upgrade route capacity and improve one of the most congested motorways in Europe. The project broke ground in September 2007 and was completed in October 2010, delivering a world-class route upgrade while causing minimal disruption to the local environment and economy.

This vast scheme involved the design, construction, operation, maintenance and financing of an upgrade to approximately 24 km of an existing two-lane carriageway, widening the road to the three-lane standard. A fourth auxiliary lane was added running both directions between the M1 and N3 junction and between the N7 and Scholarstown junctions.

Major improvements included upgrading the M1, N2 and N3 junctions from the grade-separated junction-type to partially free/free-flow interchanges, as well as upgrade works to the junctions at Ballymun, Ballymount, the N81, Scholarstown and Sandyford. Comprehensive works carried out by PJ Hegarty covered roads, bridges, paving and landscaping.

The concession period for this project is 35 years.
