BLACKPOOL COMMERCIAL PARK

PJ Hegarty spearheaded a vibrant development project encompassing retail, residential, leisure and office space in Blackpool, a northern suburb of Cork city. The Retail Park is right beside Blackpool Shopping Centre, north Cork’s main shopping hub. The €100 million project began in 2004, and was completed in four distinct phases.

Client : Shipton Group

Architect : Kelly Barry O’Brien Whelan

Structural engineer : John O’Donovan & Associates
Services engineer : John O’Donovan & Associates
Value : €100 million

The first phase of the project included the construction of 14,601 m² of retail units, 6,891 m² of modern office space, the six-screen Reel Cinema and a multi-storey car park. Phase 1 enabling works involved diverting the River Bride by removing an existing culvert, installing a new precast culvert, constructing a Textomur earth retaining wall system and a final diversion of the river to its new route. The site was then enhanced with a new landscaped park with two composite steel footbridges.

For the final three phases we constructed a 28-unit apartment block, one commercial building with ground floor retail and four floors of offices, another commercial building with ground floor retail and five floors of offices, and an additional multi-storey car park.
