THE ELYSIAN / EGLINTON STREET DEVELOPMENT

PJ Hegarty was commissioned to build The Elysian Tower in Cork and when construction was completed in 2008 it was the tallest building in Ireland. The Elysian is a landmark in Irish property development and was a key forerunner of Cork’s future docklands regeneration. Standing 68 metres tall and visible from much of the city, the 18-story tower houses 211 apartments, ranging from one-bed to three-storey ‘triplex’ penthouses. It quite literally brings apartment living in Ireland to new heights.

The Elysian development is a three-acre ‘gateway’ site at the city end of the South City Link Road, next door to Cork City Hall and overlooking the River Lee. The tower itself stands in an acre of landscaped gardens, and additional six- to eight-storey buildings comprise 4,000m² of retail space, 2,000m² of commercial office space, and a two-level basement car park with 550 parking spaces.

The area was formerly home to a railway terminus, as well as a postal sorting office, and PJ Hegarty worked with our partners and environmental consultants to ensure that excavated material from the site was sustainably reused in the construction process. Redeveloping this brownfield site began the modern regeneration of a prime location south of the River Lee, while the prominent and distinctive Elysian tower is a touchstone for the upward development of Irish cities.
